Electrical short

Hi, I am a new member. This past weekend I did a wonderful 700 miles with my wife thru Montana Glacier Natl Park. On 2 occasions I had a short when starting up -everything went dead. It did startup again but it cleared the mileage counters and the radio presets. I am afraid that it might happen again and not startup. Any suggestions? Is this common to GL1800? This is my fist Gl1800 so I am a complete newbie.

You don't have a short circuit, you have a loose connection. Probably the battery terminals are loose.

Thanks for the reply. I recently bought an optimate to charge the battery. I was not sure how the battery was for condition. How long does a battery usually last?

That just sounds like a bad connection.

Depends on how it is treated.. typically 3 to 5 years, but abused maybe less...

Thanks. I checked the connections at the terminals and pos and neg were loose. I 've tightened them - so now we will see. The battery is only a year old so it probably is not the cause. Thanks again.

I checked the connections and yes they were loose. Tightened them up and so far so good.
