electronic ignition

I just went through this. I had a 70s era 'Prestolite" ignition that packed it in and left me stranded downtown. Couldn't jump, or roll-start it (no spark). I actually tried fitting a used electronic to get home, and that didn't work. I finally bought OEM points and fitted them, which work great! I'm back to 40mpg and the bike idles smoothly.

A lot of people swear by Dyna S ignition. Better idle, response and even mileage. I won't risk breaking down again like that. Also, the Dyna S is $150+ USD. Points were about $40USD for the entire breaker plate + 2 points. I feel more secure with mechanics vs. electronic.

can only speak from my own experience which was putting a prestolite ignition on my '78 about 1979... still running and have never had to mess with it. I do realize that when electronic ignitions go, they go, but 26 years and 100,000+ miles aren't too bad

I remember the Prestolite Good unit but I don't know if they are still around. The Dynas are still fairly easy to come by all these years later.

As Mag said, some of the older electronic ignitions have been known to fail. But when you consider that all new cars and motorcycles have electronic ignition I really don't think that the new ones have a high failure rate.

Irecently installeda Dyna S to my '77 GL1000 and it works great... smoother idle, easier to start, and most important - I don't ever have to mess with points again!

If you want some opinions on this matter,
I would strongly recommend going to visit Randakk at his site randakks.com. This is an excellent source for all types of info. on the old wings.
I'm sure many of you guys riding the vintage wings can vouch for his expertise.

Ah heck, Randakk thinks it's a sin to change anything from original. He's good and knows a lot, but.......I just replaced my Dyna S, which was purchased for my Wing in 1985. The only reason it burned was because the old "piggy-back" ballast that used to come with them back then, broke and caused a surege. Even so, 20 years is a long time for any motorcycle part to last.....I had to use points till I rewired the bike. Man, I hated those points!!

the thing I hated about the points was that right after you replaced them... great milage and performance for about two tanks... then never as good... 100,000 plus miles on the prestolite and I never have to mess with it
