Just wanting to know what should or should not be used for engine cleaning. Purchased a real nice 78 1000 for my son last night and it is just mainly dusty from sitting 2 years. A little oily / greasy on the engine but looks real ggod. I want to clean and detail the engine up a little but don't want to use the wrong stuff that would perhaps be too strong and eat off original finish. Was thinking of just Gunk engine cleaner and power washing.

Simple Green is the greatest engine cleaner/wheel cleaner/body cleaner ever. Never seen it hurt anything.

I avoid power washing, it's been known to actually remove paint from the front fender ... I watched it happen on a friend's bike!

Power washing can also blast its way past bearing seals and remain inside the bearings, causing premature wear. It also seems to get into places rain or road spray doesn't, causing corrosion inside some connectors and terminals, especially if they are not protected with dielectric silicone.

Now is the best time to buy a small tube of dielectric silicone and do all those connectors while you're doing your first thorough cleaning of your new bike.

I use easy off oven cleaner, works great. Spray on let set 2 or 3 minutes hose off. If it gets on the paint hose off A.S.A.P.
