Looks like it is 1980. See the link below for frame and engine serial number identification for GL 1100.

Nope, it's an '83. Congrats! At the link you show, look at the '83 model...

The frame serial number began with 1HFSC020XDA300101 and the engine serial number began SC02E-2300012.

thank you very much!

now will this bolt in my 81 (should I keep it as a spare)

what are the differences between them?

IE: are the internal parts interchangeable ect?

anyone know off the top of their head?

It'll bolt right in.

The BIGGEST difference is the gearing in the transmission. Instead of turning 4500 RPM's at 70 MPH, you'll be doing around 3750 RPM's at 70.

If it's an '83 Aspencade engine, you'll have wonky wiring for the neutral switch. All the GL1100 except for the '83 Aspencade have a plain neutral light, the Aspencade for '83 has a 6 position switch which will tell you which gear you are in as well.

COOL is there a ez way to tell if its a aspy???

I hope

Thanks again!

Look at the plug for the neutral switch near the front of the engine. If it has 2 wires, it's an Interstate or Standard. 6 wires and it's an Aspencade.

Thank you very much sam you the man! I found another thread that you even explain how to wire it to a standard in it is in fact a aspy engine.
