Hello, I know what the book says But YOU GUYS are the experts.... I just got done doing the upper end on a 1975 engine GL1000 1979 Bike And put in a new oil filter and added 3.5 quarts of oil. The side window for the oil level is cloudy or dirty on the inside, and theres no external wiper nob like the newer ones. And it doesn't have a dip stick(Just Me) so How is my Level? Good enough to start it, But whats full 3.75 quarts? I will have to get a dip stick add on maybe? Or rebuild the engine JUST to clean the inside of the window.... NOT

If you just did a fresh top end..........you need a bit extra, 3.75 to 4.00 should be OK. A little too much won't hurt it, it'll just blow out the crank vent into the airbox(or onto theground if that's where yours is routed).Don't leave that in too long, as I'm sure you know. Any time I do a 4-stroke top end, I don't leave that first oil change in more than an hour or so........long enough to catch any crap/debri/residue and assembly lube from the build. Then I put a new filter and fresh oil in.

There is a sight glass on the side of the motor with a screw slot in it that you turn wwith a small screwdriver to clean the inside ogf the sight glass and check the oil level. Remember to check the oil with the bike on the center stand.

Well everybody else has already given you all the right advice so I'll just post a link to where the chrome dip sticks can be ordered.

I am not endorsing them, this is simply the only one I know of. But I like it.
