Engine rattle

There is a rattle in the engine when letting up on the throttle in any gearthat sounds like a marble rolling around in the engine. It also sounds kind of like it is trying to go into gear with out engaging the clutch. Any ideas? Thanks Jerry

Couple things to check. I would look at your cam belt tensioners at the front of the engine. look for a loose stator at rear of engine, accessed on left side of engine at rear. You look for a big plug facing the rear of the bike & un screw it to check the stator for a tight bolt.
Drop your oil & look for excessive filings. Cut your oil filter open & look there as well!

have you tried sychronising the carbs. My gl1100 rattled when that was the problem.

Could be many things. Nothing bad enough to tear the engine down. Best guess, without hearing it, would be the primary chain loosening up when there's no tension applied. Culprit would be the tensioner going south.

It may also be the clutch rattling around in the basket. I think you could check that without pulling the engine and it might not be a bad idea to do that. If it is the clutch, it's not going to get any better. Usually though, the basket makes a lot of noise at idle too.
