Goldwing 4 cylinder engines by nature appear to be a little on the noisy side. They whine, rattle at idle, and the shifting is a little on the clunky side. But they last almost forever if serviced regularly and after 100k still whine, rattle, and clunk the same. They got a little better from what I read here when they went to the 6 cylinder engines, not as noisey. Also, welcome to the forum!:)

Welcome! Yep, sounds like a normal 'wing to me. They all seem to have that 'clunk' sound while shifting but tranny problems seem to be very rare. I've kind of gotten to like the whining sound. Makes up a little for the quiet exhaust.

Is the "Whining" sound there all the time or just at certain speeds in each gear?:baffled:

LOL, I switched the odometer display to km/h instead of MPH and pointed it out to my bride while we were running about 70 MPH. THEN I heard whining. Had to remind her to NOT hold onto my helmet while we're riding...

I'm rolling on the floor, I've pictured in my mind what it would look like going down the road at 70 with the better half hanging onto my helmet, funny as heck in my mind.:D

Reminds me of the question: How do real women hold their liquor?

I've got that same "Whining" sound on my 83. It is usually followed by a jab in the ribs!:thumpingmad:

I have a brief whining or "whir" sound when I get on it in 3 gears, seems to be at a certaim rpm and goes away at high rpm's and at 5th gear cruising speeds (60-80) mph , thank God !

And some times it never shows up at all?

Either clutch or timing belts but it's so brief I don't worry about it!

don't know any thing about Wing clutches but some Clutches in Yamaha's (Venture/RSTD)will get bad gear wine, sounds like a Turbo sucking air!:baffled:

I have finally got used to it and do not let it bother me anymore, as long as it is not getting worse hopefully it is ok and just typical for the beast.:)
