I took my 81 Interstate out formy first ride. I was disappointed. When cruising with cruise control on it will start slowing down. When I give it the gas it will not accelerate, then all of the sudden does.
I had the carbs redone, new fork seals, valves adjusted& timing belts installed before I rode it.......what do you think?

It's not a factory cruse control, your going to have to figure out who made the thing, and maybe get info from there.
Someone here too might have the same thing that can give a hand getting it working right.

What do you mean by cruise control these old bikes never had that from the factory?
If you are talking about the throttle lock which I think I can see in the pic then they are only really good for setting a fast idle in the morning or for allowing brief periods where you can take your hand of the throttle to scratch your nose or get the circulation going in your hand.
When you say won't accelerate then does? Is this with the throttle lock on in which case you are fighting the tension and it will feel that way.
I'd give it some time and some serious miles. I don't know how long mine sat for but I've had the carbs off more times than I want to admit and finally got all the junk cleaned out of them. Everyday it seems like it runs better. I just wish I could get rid of the over 3000rpm rattle.

The cruise is a throttle lock. It has nothing to do with that. When running at 60 all of the sudden it slows down & adding more throttle will not make it accelerate, then all of the sudden it takes off. It does not die.

Try running with the gas cap loose. Could be a bad vent in the cap.

Yup, lack of gas. Does the bike stutter and feel like it's running on a couple cylinders? If not, I suspect the main line feeding the bowls is getting blocked as all the gas is getting shut off at once.

Do these carb have accelerater pumps on them? since the carbs were redone, did something get missadjusted? It the accelorater pump getting fuel. In case you don't know, the accerlorater pump pumps fuel into the carbs when the throttle is first twisted. After it is twisted, the vacuum from the engine pulls it in. When the throttle is increase, there is a drop in vacuum initially, therefore not as much full is pulled in and the accel pump makes up for it. If you look in the carb from the air side, with the engine off, twist the throttle, you should see a squirt of fuel get squirted into the carbs. It maybe there but it also must be enough.
I don't know these carbs but 95% of the carbs on the market for MC's have them.

Auto parts stores usually have the filter. some are metal, mostly they are plastic. Take the old one with you to be sure you get the right hose bib size and length.

I just returned from buying a fuel filter from a dealer. I will install it in the morning & report back. I also want to drain the fuel tank. I hope there a drain plug?

I would be surprised if that filter is the problem. It would probably be a welcomed relief though!
Maybe the pump needs to be cleaned or replaced if the filter doesn't do the trick.

Is there a place to DRAIN the fuel tank? I did not see a place. I checked the old filter & its full of particles. I'd like to drain the tank before changing the filter.
Fuel pumps are around $90 so that will be next. Hate to order one before I see what happens with all your recommendations.......Thanks Don

At this point, I would take the tank out and have it cleaned, or clean it yourself, and recoated if needed.
At least remove it and clean it out for sure.
New lines sound like they may also be in order. It will mostly be time consuming and not too expensive to do if you don't have to re-coat the inside of the tank.
You can also get a good look at the lines from the pump too.
You have done so much already, might as well put in a few more hours to be sure.

I set up a syphon and vacuumed the junk out of the tank. Hopefully a cleanout and a new filter will have it good as new.

Did you request this work or did someone diagnose a problem and recommend these "fixes"? Did the mechanic test ride and release it as repaired?

Friday- I have the tank cleaned out as well as I can clean it. Is there something I should mix with the gas when filling it up?
I hear a lot of talk about sea foam. Would this help.(there is no gunk in the tank just mild rust.)
