I have the final drive off and have all the bolts off from the inside of the unit, but I still can't crack it open.

Has anyone opened one up before to replace the oil seals???

Thanks,

Ed

the cases are a tight fit on the bearings. If all the bolts are out you just have to tap a bit harder on the cases to open it.

I got the thing apart...Had to tap on it with a screwdriver and hammer to break the seal.

I will order the new seals tomorrow and be back on the road in a few days...

I wonder why Honda say that the diff can't be opened for maintenance and repair when its an apparently easy job to do?

It's not that easy to repair once opened. I am having trouble getting a new seal pressed into place. I damaged one seal already trying to get it into place and will seek some help getting another one in place.

I am trying to get a replacement off of ebay and will try to rebuild mine and keep it as a spare.

I will let all know if I get the original one repaired.

I've seen this done! If its the very big seals you need a large diameter piece of plastic pipe on top of the seal and a bit of wood over that and tap it in. One of those trade tips I seen a mechanic do.

Jason,

I trashed the old seal removing it.

I will find something big and round the next time I try it.

Thanks for the advice....

Lesson learned :)

Thanks for the tip.

I will try that next time.

I bought an entire used final drive unit for $56 (includes shipping) off of ebay.

I will eventually fix mine and have a spare or sell it.
