Well I just drained and replaced with Val 80W-90 gear oil on the shaft. The drain plug came off easily enough, but the 17 mm filler plug was on too tight for any of my wrenches. Stripping lead to more stripping, so finally I just broke out my trusty vise grips. Needless to say, I am going to be needing a new one.

Any ideas on where to get said filler plug?

That plug has like 300 applications. I suspect Honda will be stocking them for a long time.

I think they are the same as valve tappet covers for untold old Hondas.

Yes.. they are the valve tappet covers for ALL the old 4 cylinders... CB350,CB400,CB500/550,CB750 Any junk yard will have tons of them for a cheap price!

And the twins, and the singles, just about any Honda with a chain driven camshaft.

Not all the twins and singles have the same tappet cover BUT all the old 4 cylinders are the same... so if he goes to the salvage yard he can be sure of what he gets if he specifies the 4 cylinder model. Just trying to help.

got one at honda for 6 bucks and the o-ring was 1 dollar. it is stocked at least at redlands honda anyways
