I have an 84 and when I took of the drive shaft, there was not a spring between the final drive cup and drive shaft. I saw a thread that said it was not installed in many of the 84 models. The teeth on the drive shaft and drive cup look great and there was differential fluid on both and the oil holes are both open. Is there any benefit to have the spring?
Thanks,
Lee

The spring was used only 85 on.
Perhaps it's like the snap ring on the rear drive-shaft spline and only there to aid factory assembly.
