For an online map service,

http://maps.live.com/

is a hard one to beat for getting an overall feel of where you are going.

When you enter a location, a side bar on the left opens up and it presents to you all of the pertinent things that a tourist would be likely to want to know.

If you click on the 'X' to get rid of the side bar, then you click on Bird's Eye View, you will get a very nice topo like map with the cities overlayed on that. As you zoom out, you get a very good feel for what is around that area.

Don't forget to use the F11 key to open the map up to full page. Just like going to the cinema :action:

Try it, if you haven't already. It is neat. Google is good, but for being a tourist, maps.live.com is better.

Comparing just Montrose and Durango, I was quite amazed... I didn't expect Montrose to be leading in so many catagories... I wonder where this info came from?? 164 hotels??? 453 restaurants??? I am promoting Montrose, but maybe these numbers are about Montrose county vs Durango county (not sure there is a Durango co).. For example, I think Grand Junction is in Montrose county... I don't have the time to check, now.. just seems a little bit out of whack with what I would expect.

Sorry. That ain't nowhere CLOSE. We have exactly 3 theaters. One is a drive in, open only in summer (YES, we'll go there!).

MAYBE 15 motels max, including 5 or 6 dives.

2 0r 3 florists (if THAT matters...)

NO mall.

Target, Penney's, Walmart, Sports Authority, Applebees, Chilis, Home depot.

Y'all is gots info on the WRONG Montrose!

Sorry to disappoint ya. You almost had me convinced to use your map site, but not if this is the info it gives. Don't forget that I live here. This information is messed up. We might have 25 bars, if you include Applebees, Chilis, bowling alley, etc.

Yeah Swampfox, I would question those numbers posted for Durango TOO.

17 car dealers? Wow, that would have to put one on every street corner in town.

Well, haven't cruised by this thread for a while.

Well, well, well. I guess I will have to ignore that left hand column of that map service :)

If it is that far off it really has no value.

as long as I can buy gas, find food to eat, and a roof to sleep under, I will be okay. I assume that Montrose can still provide that :grinner:

I have not been through there since 1973 and that has been way too long. I think it probably has changed a little since then anyway. :D
