For Sale - 83 Aspy - North Carolina

I am going to put my 83 Aspy up for sale, and want opinions as to a fair price, and/or any interested buyers. Here's the poop:

1983 GL1100A Aspencade - Very good condition
122,000 miles+
New tires (less than 1000 miles)
New rear bearing
New (to me) rear chrome
Markland floorboards (powder coated)
Dogbone replaced with in-line fuse
Stator tested and good, butt spliced yellow wires.
New passenger floorboards.
New Silverstar headlight
New AGM Battery

Needs:
Radio used to work, but does not now.
Cassette never worked.
CB- installed but never tested
Carb gasket
Brakes flushed and adjusted (I will have this done before selling)
Oil Change (I will do this before selling)
Saddlebag weather stripping.

This is my daily rider. It is not a show bike, but she looks real good for being 30 years old, and runs like a 5 year old. The PO did a full engine rebuild before I bought it, but I have no documentation on that.

I am thinking of asking $2,800 and am interested in your opinions. If I am asking too much (or not enough), tell me so. You will not hurt my feelings. I am going to craigslist it, but I thought I should post it here first, and that I could get an honest opinion of it's value here.

Before I read your whole post I was going to respond with $2800, which is what you have posted.

I just sold my 85 LTD and can tell you that patience is needed. There might be 1 in a 1000 that undstands an older wing. I have had guy show up to look at my 85 and just could not believe that something from 1985 would still run that well....... they wouldn't buy anything that old, just curiosity looking. But one day, a couple showed up that understood Goldwings, (From his HD buddies), he "Rode" on the back of the bike as my son drove and he loved it and paid cash! He loves the bike! Anyone else wouldn't have the appreciation for what they really are.

Thanks for the encourgement and advice. If you don't mind me asking, how did you advertise it? I have posted it on CL, and was thinking about EB also, but am not sure about the EB.

Does anyone here have experience selling a wing on eBay? What are the pros and cons? What are the costs? Any advice?

EBY pulls so many tricks and gimmicks at times it's hard to say! Last time I looked Ebay motors was like $50 to list rather it sold or not. Not sure if any other fees on top of that or not.

Then again they were charging to list regular items and last I looked it was like 50 itmes a month free, but had to pa the final value fee which is of course a percent of the winning bid price. Now I heard the also charge it on the shipping cost also. And of course they bought out Paypal several years ago so they get those fees also when you get a payment through paypal!
I dumped Ebay for most of my sales several years ago as they do nothing and was getting near as much money as me for the stuff I was building and selling! No risk to them, they make money either way, I pay out either way to them, hopefully my items would sell for enough I could make a profit on my own work sweat and expenses, course they profit rather it sells or not so they don't give a crap and even show other similar listings to compete against you and even stores they have nothing to do with just to make an extra dime even if you lose a sale because they sent some customer of yours to some other website!

Sometimes Ebay can be a decent place to sell, did I mention they don't give a crap about you as a seller though!

That's a very nice Classic Goldwing, and I believe you're in the ballpark. I might ask $3,000 and settle for $2,700 or so, and it depends a lot by local market.

I'm about to sell my '85 GL1200 Aspencade and '83 GL1100 Standard with a Vetter fairing to pick up a GL1500 Aspy, my last bike. I need some room to preserve domestic tranquility!:readit::lash::ROFL: I also don't need to maintain 3 Wings; I'm looking SIMPLIFY my life and prefer riding to wrenching.

That said, I've talked to a lot of Wing owners. Based on what they told me, EBay can work but, like Craigslist, has a lot of bottom-feeders and BSers. I think what you're doing is the best approach and what I'm going to do, other than use CarSoup, and that it FOCUSED MARKETING. Once I have clean photos, I'll post them here, the Honda Goldwing Owners Forum, and Classic Goldwing Forum, all of which I participate in. That way, only people who know what they are and are into Classic Wings will call and not waste my time with a bunch of baloney.

After posting on the Classic GW Forum, a member replied that he was inseam challenged also. He simply dropped the height of the bike by lowering the bike on the tripple tree......

I have seen the older ones listed locally on CL (in Georgia), and there seems to be a wide range in pricing. I have seen the 4-cylinder bikes selling anywhere from $250 to $4500. I think the key is finding someone who understands the older bikes. Lately, evilbay is just a good way to get screwed. Not only do they charge you a fee for every little detail, the older bikes generally do not bring what they are worth. Then you have the problem of a buyer backing out after the auction, or even worse, a buyer picking up the bike and then claiming that it had problems that you didn't list in the auction listing. In that case, ebay almost always sides with the buyer... at one time, ebay was a good place to sell vintage bikes, but the way they run it now, I would try any option before resorting to their fees. If I had the spare cash, I'd drive up and take it off your hands for $2800 in a heartbeat!

Wow! Thanks for the information. That is a very good synopsis of EB.

And it may be a mute point now. One of your fellow Georgians is interested, said he would buy it as is, and we will be working out the details over the next day or so.

He mentioned seeing my thread on a website, but he was not a member so he could not respond. He then found me on Craigs List. I think he must have been on this site. I'll find out and get him to join. This, and the Classic Goldwing Forum, are wonderful resources for a Old Gold owner.

I'll leave it posted until I have traded the title for cash, but I think she is sold.:sadguy:

Sorry tcampbell, i have been out riding the past few days and didn't get back to this post.

I posted on CL. I don't care for listing items on EBay unless I can put it in a box and ship it.

CL is simple and safe as long as you can smell a rat when one shows up. One thing for sure, Don't hold the bike for anyone!! If they guy from Georgia shows up with cash in hand, Great, If not, or till such time he does show up, don't tell anyone. Just show the bike for what it is, a great bike. Someone will come along that knows what it is and WILL pay your cash price for it!

Well, Georgia fell through. What a shame. He was talking to me about mine, and then bought one locally. I guess it makes more sense to buy local. We were about 6 hours apart.

So consider this a shameless bump. If anyone here want's a second opinion, I'll be happy to hook up with another GWF member in the area so they can inspect and comment. There seems to be a lot of scammers around these days, and I don't want anyone interested to think this is a scam.
