Forks on a GL 1100

as far as i know 80-82 forks have , in order, bottom to top , back up ring , oil seal , back up plate , snap ring.
on the 83 , bottom to top , back up ring , oil seal , snap ring , plastic washer . of course there is a dust cover that is on top of it all for all years. hope this is of some use to you.

OK, On the backup ring, What is that made of Nylon or rubber like the seal

the back up ring has a slight lip . this should be up. its made of steel .

thanks, I just got info about using a Hy dralic press to removethe seal. repace all of the hole screw, fill with oil, press down and the pressure will force the seals out. I think I can use my tractor bucket as the press.. Any way thanks for the info, I will keep slide hammering for a while as I have PB Blaster on the seals Now from the top down

You might try heating the outside of the tube in the seal areawith a heat gun if you have one . JB

Thanks JB, I will try that, Also I just tried to put them back together to use the hydralic press Idea and or the tractor bucket and I cannot get the forks together, the lover inside tube that controls the oil flow will not go to the bottom of the tube so I can put the (allen bolt) in the bottom. I should have taken them to a MCycle sshop...AGGGGH

are you saying you cant get the top tube to the bottom of the lower leg?? so then you can put the bolt back in. If so the bottom thingy sleeve that fits into lthe bottom of the damper???< brain dead for the name right now lock Collar ??> must have come loose and you will have to try the slide hammer attempt. Are you absolutely positive you have the thin washer off the top of the seal. sometimes they are almost invisible. Ive hadone get caught in thesnap ring landbefore and couldnt slide hammer it. off the top of my head I would say either that, the backup ring,or the top bushing has been loctited in place. JB

I say that he tube (about 8"long with the rebound spring on it) seems not to go to the bottom of the lower tube so I can put the Allen in,Top tube seems to go up and down fine. so I can put the long spring in and put the rest of the closures in so I can, fill it with oil and try getting the seals out with hydraulic presuure.. No I never got the tubes apart, upper and lower. I am absolutly sure the washers are out, one is on the work bench and the other one is missing, both tubes will not Slide Hammer apart, maybe some one use glue or locktite, I am thinking of using a razor knife next maybe the heat will work, I have torchs and heat guns

I had the same problem this year. I couldn't seem to slide hammer them apart either. Finally, I said to myself, It's just GOT to come out - I pulled VERY hard and VERY fast, the tube came out. I tried to pry the seal out and broke the lip of one of the aluminum bottoms. I got a used set on ebay, and rebuilt those. New seals and bushings. It worked out OK for me, but the bike was down a couple weeks.

Hey Brian, thankks, I just cant pull any harder, I give up on that methoud, am pulling on them has moved my work bench off the wall and across the room, A Motorcycle mechanic said I could put two metal screws through the rubber seal and use dikes on the screws to pry them up and out. another person saidheat the tubes up to the pint that water would boil and than slide hammer....................



I dont know what I will do next. Yes I do need a metal spacer that goes under the circlip, it was missing on one fork, but wait till I distroy a fork or two, I may need more parts...UGHWhat a Pain in the butt
