Front forks noise, GL1800

1463 Views 5 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Racerx
Lately when I am riding in town I have been hearing a clacking noise like something is loose from the front fork area. I though it was the brakes and I checked the bike over and every thing is tight. I also put the bike on the center stand and cannot replicate the sound. I have a 2004 GL`1800, no abs and 33k on it.

My first thought would be to tighten the steering head bearings. If you can do it yourself there would be no real cost and a added peace of mind to know that they are good to go. They have a loaner tool available for free / minus the shipping it back. I have one I made that I would be glad to loan out also.
Thanks Racerx but I have a guy who lives near that has the tool already. We are going to tighten it next week. But curious on why it would be making this noise when the bike only has 33k on it
Lift the front of the bike up and check the fork bushings.Have you checked or changed the fork oil? They will make a clunking noise.Ask Goldwinger. He had his done at a shop and not really sure if they weren't filled properly or what happened, but they only lasted about a year and were worn out.
Took my wing over to a friend's (Orrin) house and we tore it down to the steering head bolt. We put it all back together torquing everthing to to specs. Took a ride and no more clunking noise. Glad I did not have to replace or rebuild anything.
I have heard others say that after they re-torqued them they were good for another 60K before they started to hear it again. So maybe you will be good until 90K on the speedo. :claps:
