Check the steering head bearings for looseness in the triple tree. May also need a new front tire?

Had the same thing on my used 85 Aspencade when I got it. The tire was cupped some and the air pressure was too low. Increasing the air pressure to about 41 psi helped and later replacing the tire cured the problem.

As posted above, check the steering head nut. It's a bit of a PITA to do but sure worth it. The manual will give torque specs, but on a previous 1200 I had, I tightened the nut about twice what the specs recommended. I also added a fork brace and it rode 100% better.
