front wheel wobble

This happened a while back but I was coming home one night when a rabbit came out of the ditch and hit my front wheel. It caused my front wheel to go into a wobble and took about 200 feet until I could stablize it again. I am just glad that I wasn't going faster. I wastraveling at about 25 mph.

What should one do in that case where something hits your front wheel while traveling? It was the 1st time it ever happened to me.

Did you run over it or did it just smack into the side of the wheel:stumped::stumped:

It just hit the tire and bounced off and went rolling into the ditch. Luckily it wasn't a racoon or badger. They got a little more weight on them.

Ssometimes you have to accelerate and get the weight off the front wheel .

SOunds like that might work. But back in the late 70s I had a honda cb450 with a fork mounted fairing that I had just bought. I was driving it home going down hill past a cemetary when my front end started wobbling like crazy. I tried to hold it still but could not so I down shifted. The next thing I knew is I was rolling down the road without a bike. So maybe you're right.
By the way we found that taking the fairing off stopped that wobbling. The bike was only scratched up some from accident. The old owner said he never had any problems.

That was the problem with fork mounted fairings, as they were quite unstable.

Not long ago I had a bird do the same thing. I saw it feeding on road kill ahead of me and knew it was going to happen, so I started slowing down just in case.

Sure enough, this fairly good sized South American hawk left at the right moment and hit my front tire on the back side.

The wobble was unbelievable.

It might be the wobble was aggravated by the speed you were traveling. Twenty five mph is pretty close to the 35mph area that all 'Wings like to wobble if given half a chance. Anything hitting a spinning wheel parallel to the axis can initiate a wobble, try it with a spinning top or gyroscope, it can cause a very strong wobble to occur. It has to do with precession and the sideways resistance of the pavement coupled with the springiness of the fork and bike combination. Even a car's front wheel can wobble when hit sideways, normally the wobble will decay unless it's close to the resonant frequency of the wheel and vehicle combination.

If the front end shakes don't touch the brakes.
If you've got a wobble you open the throttle.

You mean the wabbit made the wheel wobble on the Wing??? (Whew, say that fast!!!)

`
I agree, hit the throttle and lean way back and try to lift the front off the ground.

AZgl1500 is right. When the rabbit hit the wheel it slowed it down and part of the wobble is the rear wheel is now going slightly faster so it is now trying to pass the front and causes the wobble. It's the same reason a trailer will wobble behind you and applying power usually stops the wobble. That gyroscope post about this was right on too.

A mistake some people make is to try to pull on the bars in opposition to what they are doing during the wobble. The human mind cannot react fast enough to counter the wobble. Pull straight back with both hands, this creates a damper that will help to stop the wobble.

Ha, very nice!

I hit a deer 4-6 weeks ago with my front tire, but I didn't get any wobble. I must have been going too fast (45?) when I hit it? I clipped the rear of the deer and broke both back legs, but I had no damage to the bike. I was REALLY lucky!

I once hit a dog at 10-15mph. Threw me right over the bars.

Do the same thing you'd do in a car or truck
Buy the book, How to Cook A Rabbit and quit wearing that Woodsman cologne, you're baiting them dude!

Hit a Black Angus once and I went down. The damn thing looked at me and said:

"We bulls wobble but we don't fall down...
