does anybody what cause 1986 1200 i to quite running at a half tank i was told that the fuel cap is bad? and when i take the cap off it lets off presure under the cap, is that normal????

You will get a pressure release when you open the cap, that's normal.But if the cap isn't venting the pressure will be greater. If the bike starts normally when you open the cap, just get another one.

I would check the fuel pump.

Perform a functional check on the fuel pump.. Did you replace the fuel filter?

If you get that pressure reliefe when opening the fuel cap, the cap is working properly.. Look elsewhere. :)

Simplest test would be to run it with the cap loose.

but i was told there should be no presure under the cap at all, by the dealer??

I've encountered the same problem on my '81 1100 which was vapor lockingso itest ran it with the cap loose and found that to be the culprit. My fix, which you may not agree to,was to remove the plasticcap holder and drilled2 very small holes on either side of the cap. Problem solved.
