last fall I put the bike away as normal, now this year neither the gas gauge or temp gauge will work. I spent all day yesterday trying to find the problem. any suggestions would be great

On 80 and 81's the gas gauge is usually a dirty contact underneath the seat right in the middle?

but with the temp gauge out also it may be something else?

Could be a fuse or possibly the 7 volt supply. I don't have a schematic for that year, but someone around here will and can tell you the fuse and wire colors to check. But first check all the fuses.

More than likely it's a bad connection, if all was fine before you put her up for the season, & now the fuel & temp gauges aren't working. They are both powered by the 7 volt power supply, which is located behind them in the dash. It will probably be on the positive side, as the positive is common between the two & the negative to each meter comes from the devices.
