Did that era have the little white plastic "door" at the opening of the lock? My 85 Interstate has beed a headache in that area. If it comes from hot country, the plastic gets brittle, then breaks up eventually, when one sticks the key in. Gotta get the lockoff, do the tapping thing, to get the pieces out. I had to use a needle several times. Bet that's what it is. Good luck.
