To get to the gear positioning I need to take off the front engine cover. Can I do this with the engine in the frame? This is a 1988 GL1500

Yes you can. Make a note of where each bolt came out of, they are different lengths.

Also make sure you have the switch lined up with the yoke before bolting down the cover. If the cover doesn't want to go on with light finger pressure the switch may not be mated with the yoke.

Drain the oil first. I made the mistake of not draining it and lost a lot of it on the floor.
