Straddle the bike, both hands on the handlebars. Pull back on the handlebars while pushing forward with feet to get bike to rock as far back as possible. As bike starts to rock back forward, give it a gentle push forward on the handlebars to help it along. As soon as it goes "over center" on the center stand and starts to come down forward, I get on the front brake to ease it down gently.
I use the sidestand if out and about, or if parked for less than a few hours at home in the garage. I use the center stand when parked in the garage overnight or longer - i.e. when done riding for the day.
