I am looking for a set of carbs for my 1979 gl 1000. the number stamped on them is a 771a, but i am having trouble finding them. Would another number work such as a 769a?

Just about every year GL1000 had changes to the carbs, thus different numbers. The worst thing you can do is mix numbers in the set of 4. Finding a matched set, including the 1100's can be made to work on the 1000's

yeah i have been looking for matched sets, and all i am finding is 769 or 758 sets. but you say 1100 carbs will fit?

there is very little difference between the two motors and they are all internal the 1100 carbs will bolt right up to the GL1000

All the carbs from 75 to 83 will fit..just will not work at optimum performance. There were chances every year to cams, timing etc. Most won't notice the difference in performance but you will lose some top end and acceleration. The 1100's you'll need to plug the vacuum advance tube.

thanks for the help. Where would be the best place to find a good set of carbs, other than e-bay?

Well, certainly the best option would be the OEM honda carbs. It would cost you around $750 but would solve the problem once for ever.
