Hey gang, had my (new to me) 76 GL-1000 out at night for the
first time yesterday. It seems to me that the speedometer and tach
lights are awful dim. I could barely read 'em in the dark.
Is there a dimmer switch somewhere that I haven't found?
Thanks everyone!!

I have two GL's and both seem very dim the only thing I can suggest is brighter bulbs. you will have to do your home work to figure out that one though.

Ok Scott. Guess I'm just too accustomed to my BMW that I rode for 30
years. Never had trouble seeing the gauges on that one.
I'll research brighter bulbs.

Hey Off Center,

You probably don’t need brighter bulbs, just newer ones. Over the years bulbs get weaker and start to mirror and smoke up on the inside. This adds to the dimming effect. New bulbs of the same type will probably work fine.

If the gauges are anything like the 1100’s, then you need only pull the bulbs from the back, change them and then push back in.

Good luck.

Tim.

There are a few posts at NGW using replacement led's. I think they're plug and play. In the photos, they look much brighter. I forget the title of the thread, but it includes part numbers and sources.

Hi George, as Tim says, the bulbs are just old. When you pull them out, they will be black and shiney like black chrome. It's a wonder any light gets out at all. You may want to give some thought to replacing them with LED's.

Same problem when I switched from my BMW R80 RT to GL1000
You just got to change the bulbs for new ones and that will do the trick, if your tachs are in good shape (meaning the green color inside is still pretty)
