Can an out of sync carb cause a noticeable knock at idle? My 81 Interstate has developed a very noticeable knock after not being ridden much over the last year. It will start and will run if the the throttle is feathered from a dead stop, and under power the knock disappears and the bike runs fine. Thanks for your help.

Yeppers, it's known to happen often. Get the carbs synced and idle set then see if it goes away.

The primary chain, the one that goes from the crankshaft to the transmission flops around and makes quite a noise if the engine isn't idling smoothly. Just the design of it.
