GL 1200 Blinker problems

737 Views 9 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  DaveO430
Just got off a 878 mile weekend trip in the heat of eastern Washington (averaged 49MPG!) and encountered an odd problem. My left blinker came on, got bright and low, sometimes almost flashing and then went back to off. All this was when the blinker wasn't being used.

Sometimes would come on when a bump would rattle it. Right blinker was fine. I'm guessing something may be rubbing in the wiring harness or perhaps it's something else. Anyone else encounter this problem? I replaced the entire harness 20 years ago when the signals simply quit working altogether. I replaced the regulator two years ago. I'm going to double-check the wiring under the left cover adjacent to the battery to make sure nothing is/has been burning.

Any thoughts?

If the left signal works normally when you use it I would suspect a wire shorting to power somewhere or it could be a bulb shorting internally to the position or tail light.
I think bulb replacement would be good and at least eliminate that possibility. I'll try that first.
I think I solved the problem. I did change the four signal bulbs. They were the originals 28 years ago. I then pulled off the left side cover to check the wiring harness that was changed 20+ years ago. I found TWO wires where insulation had come off. A single strand on one was likely the culprit.

Taped them both up. I then hit the switch with electrowash and worked the switch. Put cover back on and did a 15-mile test ride. Seems to be ok. A longs test, however, will be required, but I think I got it.
Nice easy fix then. I had a similar problem a few years back, a mouse had set up home in the fairing and used the insulation from the indicator wires to decorate his home.............
I was thinking blinker fluid....lol

I believe that is in the same aisle as 1970s Volkswagen radiator coolant and the high compression lug nuts.
Blinker issue AND horn...

Hi guys!
Very helpful hints!
I have one for ya too. I am on the road and just had a problem with my switches on the left bar. The turn signals stopped working, no brake lights or horn either... The 4 ways work as does the Hi/Low beam switch and the radio controls...
Checked fuses under the tool tray all fine, checked connections to fuse box, clean and tight. Any ideas? I am 400 miles from home and it would be nice to have signals and brake lights...
Before a ride 20 years ago (week long), my turn signals quit. Cold turkey. Had to replace the wiring harness and we then by-passed the white molex-like connector under the left side side cover. Hard-wired it.

Check the connectors but you may need a new harness. Could also double-check the signal switch on left handlebar and use electrically-safe cleaner but my guess is the harness.

Check fuse #2 again, and just replace it. All those things that are not working get power from that fuse.
