My riding partner has a 1987 1200 Aspencade, over the past few weeks he has been intermittently smelling gas around his bike when it was parked in his garage. A couple days ago he walked int the garage and saw a puddle of gas on the floor under the bike, he pushed it outside for the night and it leaked out 3/4 tank of gas over night.



He's thinking the carb might need to be rebuilt and has been searching for a good deal on a carb rebuild kit. He's an older retiredGentleman in his 70sand has limited funds to spend on repairing the bike.

He has a stuck float valve. DO NOT TRY TO START!


The cylinders and oil are filled with gas. This is known as hydrolock. Trying to start can bend rods and or valves.

Shut off the petcock.

Pull the spark plugs.

Turn kill switch off.

Turn over the engine to purge out the gas in the cylinders.

Change oil and filter.

Sometimes it can be corrected after doing the above,
Open the petcock and tap on the carb bodies with a soft hammer or extra large screwdriver several times. Otherwise a carb cleaning might be needed. Also check the fuel tank for rust. Change the gas filter, Napa 3011 is a good replacement, it's a little bigger body but the clamp can go over it, might need a longer screw from the hardware store, metric. Just take the old screw with you and get one @ 1/4" longer.
