Weak or dying battery can cause this.

Or a bad connection on battery cables. Put a voltmeter on the battery and read it while you try to start the bike.

16 years on a bike battery? Amazing! I bet it fails load test though.

That battery doesn't owe anybody anything!

Thanks for the reply.I just removed the trickle charger and was getting over 15.5 volts on voltmeter (up from 13.5v last tested definitely not healthy).Checked with volunteer as I tried starter and it dropped to 5volts.I think it is definitely knackered.

that battery is definitely due for a 'warranty replacement' 🖐
