GL 1800 service plan

Hi all

I finally became a card carrying Goldwing owner. Go a 2008 GL1800 w/ ABS and only 8300 miles for a great price. Gotta love these recessions.

Hit the local Honda dealer today to transfer the warranty which was good till 12/2010 and decided to add the extra 48 months w/ roadside assistance for a total of $980. A little steep but I figure if I ride a lot, it will be worth it and if I don't and sell it, it will be a good selling point.

Question though is about an extended service plan the dealer offered. Basically, for $1000, they will perform all the servicing on the bike, parts and labor, for three years. It also provides discounts on the wear items (tires and the like).

I am wondering if this is worth the cost or is this something they sell just to make a few extra dollars ?

I have a good shop and feel I could easily do all the maintenance but my time is worth something too and looking at all the parts that have to come off to do some of the work, it may be of benefit.

Would be great to hear from anyone who has purchased and used a service plan similar to this and how well it worked.

Happy riding

Doug

I don't have the plan but at dealer prices it won't take long to get $1000 worth but that same grand would buy a lot of service parts. I will put on about 75,000 miles in 3 years so it would have been a good deal for me but I would rather do my own service.

On the average, all service plans cost more than the actual service performed (or they wouldn't be selling them).. The key word is "average"... Like Dave says, it is the ones that ride a lot that get most of the benefit... and $1000 for 4 years sounds pretty reasonable anyway...

Is your extended warranty good at other dealers???? This has been a problem for some. If on a trip and a breakdown happens.... the warranty may be moot! At least with the Honda extended warranty, all Honda Healers are "supposed" to honor the contract.

Just a caution.

According to the paperwork, the warranty is nationwide as well as the roadside service.

I'm going to do some calculations this weekend to see what the potential labor part of the standard service is for three years and see how that looks.

Thanks for the feeback

I met a guy in Kingman AZ coming back from Wing Ding this year, who had bought of the service plan. Because of the all the year round riding he does, he came out sabout $1100 aheadby the end of the plan period and bought an additional 3 year when it was offered to him.

I bought my GL1800 in May 08and have just under 26,000 miles. I wish my dealer had offered that to me when I bought mine.

Which dealer did you get yours at? I got mine at Mallott's and they didn't offer a plan either.

I would call other dealers to see if they would honor the service plan. Dealers sometimes will tell you anything to get you to buy their plans and after you get them you find out your stuck and theres nothing you can do. Call around to be sure youre getting what youve been promised.
