Hello everyone !

I now have 32000 miles on my 2002 GL 1800, and following the book as I always do, it is now time to have the valves adjusted. I do all of my own work, however, this job appears to be onefor the "pros". Is it really necessary for this adjustment at this mileage or can I go beyond it ?I don't hear any unusual noise or sounds at this time andthe bikeisrunning fine.Any thoughts ?

Thanks,

TJ

The engines can normally go beyond that mileage but I would not push it too far without at least checking to see if the valves at least have some valve clearance. The valve clearance is the crucial part and the valves must have clearance for heat expansion and wear that takes place at the valve seat and face. If the valve clearance becomes "0" it can cause a valve to be burned, valve to be overheated,or bad valve sealing in the cylinder. If you are going to ride way outside of the mileage requirement for the valve adjustment at least check to see that the valves have clearance.

Good luck:waving:

I wonder how hard it would be to just check the clearance w/o making any adjustment. It looks like it would be a lot easier than my old 1300 VTX.

even for great barn mechanics like myself...id let the shop do it and make sure a well experienced mechanic does it...that has done many....also you need a library of shims to swap out on the fly(is best)....some will take measurements and go get the shims but all in all the shop can do it easier and it has to be done right....p.s. you can probably go much higher miles if no issues...but it becomes a warranty issue if not done??
