How do I get the old copper gaskets out of the header before I attach it back to the head? I have tried scraping, prying, praying, etc. I haven't done this before. This is a 78 GL 1000. I have the replacement copper gaskets, but don't know how to get the old ones out.:praying:

I'm sure the 1000 can't be all that different from the 1200... for this job I made my own tool. A small-ish flat head driver, heated with a map gas torch, locked in a vice and the tip bent at 90 degrees. Use a hammer to wedge it under the ring and then rock and pry til it pops out. Kind of a home-made industrial-strength dental pick...

seems LIKE i REMEMBER A LITTLE NOTCH AT ONE SPOT ON THE HEAD THAT allows yoiu to pry up the ring..mine popped up with a pressure from a screw driver angled in.

I just use a thin sloted screwdriver and a hammer to get under it and then pry it out. Not real hard to do.

Am I missing something? Please take a look

Here are a couple of pix of the header. Is this the way it is supposed to look before taking out the copper gasket? Whatever is in there seems to be molded right in place and I can't even find an edge to try to tap a small screwdriver in to. Before I go too far, I just need a reality check.

Ok, here's where I tread lightly and tell you to take my words with a grain of salt because I really can't swear to the fact that the 1000 is the same, but on the 1200, the copper ring is in the head itself. If you look up in the holes where the header goes you'll see the copper rings. They won't look like rings anymore but more like flat washers.
