I was wondering if it is possible to change the head gasket without taking the cam off the head? The book is telling me totake it all apart. If the pulley, cam, and head can come out in one piece that would help allot, But i really don't want to get the head broke loose and not be able to take it off because ofsome kind of interferencedue to the skipped steps.thanks again for any help.

If you can get to all the head bolts with the cam in place, leave it there.

Yes they as englishted said can be changed with the camshafts in place.
Just make sure you remove the seventh bolt.
Here's a picture off Evilbay of the GL1000 heads someone is trying to sell as "good used". Note the missing piece on the right head in the picture.

will the back of the belt cover come with it or does the pulley have to come off the shaft?
That part of the belt cover is only attached to the head so yes just remove the belt and the seven bolts.
Taking the pulley and cover off does make it easier to clean the gasket surface but is not necessary.
