Can't speak for a 77 but i had a Venture with a headlight system warning light that was to indicate if one of the filaments had failed and was in a "backup" mode (using 1 filament for both hi & low functions) Could yours be similar??

the head light is good high and low beams so maybe there is something going on with the wireing
