I am bringing another GL1000 back to life, and this one jumps right out of gear when the clutch is released and any throttle is applied. It seems like the shifter is just not pushing the shift drum far enough to engage the dogs

Has anyone seen this problem before and/or can you offer a solution besides cracking the cases? Thanks TS99

Is your clutch adjusted properly? If not then it could also affect the shifting (especially into 1st from neutral). In my case the clutch is adjusted a little bit too tight so sometimes the 1st gear will not engage throughly (as you described), however when I release the clutch lever and pull it again (one or two times) and then step on the gear lever the gear will engage.

Just a thought!

You can pull the front cover off and inspect the shift drum and mechanism to see if it is actually rotating the drum fully to first gear position.
