I have a 79 gl1000 and the engine makes a load noise at idle and goes away at about 2000 rpm does anyone have a idea what it is?

Pretty common with these bikes, usually comes from the carbs not being balanced at idle. Do a search for "carb synch" in the forums here and you'll find lots of information including how to fix it. Good luck, and keep us posted.

john piper. I sent you a pm that might help with the noise, if it is the primary chain making it. it works for me.

When the bike has been unused for some days ,the mechanical fuel pump wil have to pump new fuel to the carbs . - this can take some time !

Sounds like the ignition module is going south. hope not, but that's where I would start. also check fuel filter. Good luck
