My '79 GL1000 with about 68K on it has a rattle from what appears to be the crankcase when near idle. It goes away as the RPMs are increased a little. Even a higher idle speed cuts down on the noise. Timing? Rod knock?

Any other ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Most likely its the drive chain. Common, and not normally an issue (I never had a 4 banger wing without at least a little noise). A VERY good sync. can get rid most of it.

BTW: Does it go away if you pull in the clutch?

I think with a little practice you could sync the carbs just by the sound of the primary chain rattle.
Even with a real good sync it will usually make some noise until the engine is warmed up a bit.
