Ok, I'm getting ready to do my timing belts on my GL1000. A couple of questions.

I didn't find any specific article on how to do this on the 1000, however I assume that the basics are the same across the board?

I did find a video of an 1100 timing belt change on Youtube, but it seemed maybe more parts were removed than were needed.

My concern is, why would you need to remove the valve covers to do this? I understand setting an engine to TDC on a complete rebuild, but couldn't you ensure correct alignment just using the front of the engine where the belts are, by aligning specific points as you rotate it prior to pulling the old belts?

I am trying to avoid any extra maintenance and chance of stuff getting into the top end if removing the valve covers is not absolutely essential.

What they said. ^ It is easier on the earlier models with less stuff in the way. It would be a great time to check valve clearance if it has not been done recently, but valve covers do not have to come off.
