GL1100 engine in a GL1000?

Did a search and saw some comments about "swappability". I read about GL1100 (and 1200) engines having a pulse generator on the back making them a little longer, but basically it was stated that it's do-able, yet I couldn't find anywheresolid evidence it's been done. A friend of mine is considering buying a GL1000, and I have a donor GL1100 bike for him (if he wants it). Does the GL1100 engine swap into a GL1000 easy enough?

Do-able but........ yes, the ignition unit on the rear of the 1100 will interfere with the frame (or the other way about :) ) so the solutions are:

Flatten the offending part of the frame with a large 'Mechanics Best Mate'

or,

Best solution since he has the 1000 engine. Swap the heads, cams, advance/retard unit,
carbs etc from the 1000 to the 1100, remove the ignition unit from the 1100 and blank off the shaft housing (you may be able to remove the shaft after the rear cover is off, but not sure. If not, the only way to remove it would be to split the crankcases; you don't want to go there!)
This conversion keeps all the 1000 wiring intact too. No messing about fitting the 1100 ignitor system.

Thnx for reply Old Fogey. I should have explained, the engine on the GL1000 my friend is looking at has broken cases - it grenaded. The bike is otherwise minty. My engine is a very nice runner, and I just had the heads off and head gaskets replaced... it is in excellent shape, but the starter clutch has packed it in. Am looking at fixing or selling my my bike... not sure yet.

Thnx Dave... that's what I thought too... my understanding is the engines are so similar, but it's always dangerous to assume it'll work. Anyone remember ever actually having seen the swap done/know someone who's done it?

There was a Marine that did it here a couple years ago. He had to cut the frame rear cross member in the back to get it to fit and make a new cross member. Just have to be handy w/metal and welding.

A guy that worked on my 1000 a few years ago did that to his 1k. was told he had to use the 1k rear cover and if I remember correctly he just cut off the what he needed to get the cover to fit. then he used the 1k's ignition system

SuperSkypilot Stuffed a 1200 motor into a 1000 frame. Don't see why an 1100 wouldn't fit.

Hi Wilf - reread the thread... it's not for my bike. A friend in Edmonton has a thing for GL1000s. A nice condition GL1000 is available there with blown engine. Just looking at whether my engine (from an '82 GL1100) will fit in that bike. Starter clutch BTW is not a quick or easy fix... requires engine pulled and back cover off to access stator. The starter clutch is behind and integral to the stator basket.

Hey Daryl
I understand what you where saying but still think you would be pulling engine anyway and fixing starter clutch so why not just put it back in 1100. and find a 1000 for the gl000.
Wilf
