If a GL1100 float heights were all set to 21mm, what kind of problems would that cause?



I have a specific reason for asking this question. I have been having some problems with my carbs, but I do not want to go into detail just yet, so that I can get true and uncontaminated answers. I have read many different posts in my efforts to fix my problem. Your answers will help me determine what kind of problem I have and my course of action. Thank you for your help!

I would think the fuel level would be too low. Which means way too lean.

Thank you so much for all your quick answers. Everybody agrees that it would run way too lean. That is what I thought as well.

The reason I took the carbs off in the first place is that one of the carbs was acting up on the right side and was running way to rich (black smoke with throttle applied). I have checked the vacuum slides and they seem to be good. When I checked the floats they were all set to 21mm. I followed randakks instructions to measure the height. I did find however that one of the floats alignment was off, so I bent it to shape. I have sense set the right side floats to the correct 15.5mm.

But this makes me wonder, why are the left side carbs working properly if they are set to 21mm as well? The randakk instructions mention that the floats should be level with the carb body when measuring the height, resting against the spring but not compressing it. But these floats are only level when the carbs are upside down (sping compressed by their wieght). I am having trouble figuring out why the left carbs are even working and why one of the right carbs were running rich.

Are the carbs from a 1000? Do the tops of the carbs have a 3/8 inch raised portion or are they relativly flat? One air cutoff valve - 1000 . Four air cuttoff valves - 1100. Flat tops are 1100 carbs. They should be parallel to the body and 15.5 mm when the rack is up on end and the floats just touch the valves. Hope this helps.

goldwingnut, thanks for the info. i am sure the carbs are from a 1100 now. So now I am extremely confused as to why the the #2 and #4 carbs are working with the floats set to 21mm. I am guessing that the #3 and #1 were running rich from the misalignment of the float on #3 and a missing tab on #4. The missing tab is the tab that is supposed to stop the floats from falling fully open. The randakk instructions say that if that tab does not work properly then the carb will fail. I have about 3 different questions but if anyone can explain these problems or disagree with my analysis please let me know. Thanks!!

Actually the only time you would probably notice a low float is under serious hard throttle in a higher gear. If you turn off the petcock the bike will run until the bowls are dry.

When I rebuilt my GL1100 carbs, setting the floats with the floats just resting against the needles without comprssing the springs, and then turned the carbs upside down they compress the springs and appear to be out of adjustment. The gas stains on the floats were not even from one end of float to the other. When I turned them I realised they had been set with the carbs upside down. This is not correct in my understanding. Check GL1100 carb rebuild in naked Gold Wings.
