GL1100 like its in neutral!

I've had this bike for 3 months now and have been dealing with one problem after another. Please help! I finally got it running great took it for a spin around the block and was cruising downhill when rpms started to raise up even though I was slowing down, gave it some throttle, nothing was like the bike was in neutral, tried shifting through all gears nothing. Read a blog where someone was having a similar problem and it had been suggested the individual check two springs in the front of the tranny (behind the water pump and oil filter) checked them they are fine. Was thinking it can’t be the clutch because it was so sudden and when I put it up on the jack, start it and put it in gear the rear wheel doesn’t even try to move. Also there is a low rumble from the engine/tranny when I put it in gear. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! If I can’t figure it out soon I’m going to just pull the engine and tear into it. THANKS!

sounds like the engine is not connected to the rear end any more. there is a rubber bellows at the back right side of the engine, pull it back and see if the "c" clip has come off, and letting the splines seperate.

If that checks out okay, you probably have stripped the splines on the drivershaft going into rear gears set. Pull driveshaft out and find out.

Hi
I would very much doubt that stripping the engine out will help.

Likely as not it is transmission at either end of the drive shaft.

post a little about what you have done recently to it. that may well help us to help you.

Just out of interest also post if you have done an oil change as certain oils are not very good with the goldies clutch.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I can’t wait to get home and explore. I will definitely let you guys know what I discover. As far as what I’ve done to it... when I got it the electrical was one big rats nest with nothing plugged in and every bit of electronics in a box. got that straightened out for the most part (still have to figure out the blinkers and brake lights) went through the carbs (didn’t rebuild but was able to just clean them out good enough so that it ran good) did a lot of cosmetic work, paint, seat... the oil was a bit low so I did put in about 3/4 quart of 10w30 as was the coolant and when I got it running originally the idle jets were plugged so I put some sea foam in that’s about it.

I had the same thing happen to me when I was trying to get my 1200 running after buying it. I of course change oil and cleaned everything that had gas in it (tank, carbs, etc). When I changed the oil I put in some oil treatment to make sure that everything would be well lubed when I started it. The clutch worked when I first started it up but quickly quite working after taking it around the block a couple times. I tried everything including bleeding the clutch for hours. After reading the manual and it said not to use oil additives because the clutch is bathed in the oil and may slip if additives are use. I changed the oil and bleed the clutch numerous times and I finally started getting a little action. I was afraid I would have to tear it apart but it seemed to work a little better. After putting some miles on it and bleeding it again it is working fine. I am not sure if it was the additive or maybe just some stubborn air in the lines.

Where yours came onquickly I wondered if you have changed oil lately and maybe evenput in an additive (justice brothers, stp, marvin's mystery oil).

Think I’ve got them posted you’ll have to let me know if they aren’t there. It’s defiantly a one of a kind! I have still yet to put some drag bars on it, they are being custom made as I couldn’t find any 7/8" drag bars wide enough for my taste.
