I've searched the forums and have not found the info I'm looking for. My GL1100 isn't firing on the #1&3 cylinders at low RPM. The weather has been preventing me from riding it to find out if this is a problem all time or not. I get a slight amount of suction at the tail pipe on the right side and it never gets hot. I'm getting spark and just replaced the plugs. The bike is new to me but the previous owner says he recently rebuilt the ignition system. I've lost his number so I can't ask him for a list of what he's done. It's hard to start sometimes and the idle is set really low. When it's warm it idles at about 700-800 rpm but will usually die if you let it idle for a few minutes. I know the carbs need to be synced and I'm pretty sure the needle and seats are worn. (left the petcock open over night once and had quiet a bit of fuel in the #4 cylinder) What I want to do is check the timing, set the idle, and balance the carbs. What I don't know is what order should I do this in and what parts should I be replacing or cleaning to make sure I'm doing it right. Any input will be greatly appreciated.

It's an 80 model. Sorry forgot to mention that. I let it run today at about 1000 rpm for maybe 5 minutes then it died. I checked the temp at the headers and felt heat but it didn't seem as hot as it should. #1 was noticeably hotter than #3. When I started it back up I set the throttle to about 1200 rpms using what I assume is the cruise control (a clamp on the throttle that you can engage/disengage with your thumb) and watched the rpms slowly creep down. I revved it up to about 3500 then set it to run at 2500 for a few minutes and it held steady. I checked the temp at the headers again and #1 was too hot to touch but #3 was still just pretty warm. I confirmed spark on all 4 cylinders when I put in the new plugs just a few days ago. Since then my metric plug socket has gone missing (of course) so I'll get a replacement in the morning and double check. I'll run a compression test as well. I don't notice any difference when I pull the choke. I'm not sure it's hooked up. I'm confused. How is there not a way to adjust the timing? I have a Clymer's that has instructions on how to set the timing. Am I just reading it wrong?

You are correct sir. It does cover the GL1000. Well shoot. I was hoping to avoid that. I guess if I have to pull them I might as well rebuild them. I've seen people on this forum recommend a certain website for rebuild kits. Anyone know what that website is?

Ok. Thanks for the help everyone! It will probably be a few weeks before I get the time to do it but I'll post again when I'm done. Thanks again.
