GL1100 running extremly rough

I have my gl1100 and I have the charging problem fixed i hope got it running now thank goodness. However now it idles like crud, it is way rough and you have to keep the choke on full to get it to idle. Of course doing this causes it to rev like no tomorrow. So the carbs have been rebuilt and were not bench synched. I have not synced them yet which is probalbly what I have to do I just want to make sure that this is the next step.

So far

Rebuilt the carbs all blasted out and put together no leaks. When you start the bike it starts no problem but then it runs rough and you smell gas you throttle up and it recovers. It makes the knock knock sound. When you rid it you have to either keep the choke on so you dont stall at idol or keep on the throttle when you start it sounds like it is running on one cylnder and then all of a sudden it starts to run fine, well a little rough but you can tell it is using all of the cylenders finally.

So I know i have to sync them just want to make sure that that should be what this is. On the bright side atleast i got to go for a ride this year finally.

Any help would be great.

First make sure your ignition system is in good shape. Just yesterday I went to help another member synch his carbs and it was obvious it could not be done with the engine running like it was. His plug caps and plug wires were bad. He went today and got what he needed from an independent shop for about $20. Called me after he put them on and reported great improvement.

Along with checking the ignition system like someone else already recommended, I'd double check the valve clearance and timing and then synch the carbs. In my mind these are all so closely intertwined that I always do them in a group as part of one procedure. This little 10 minute procedure before synching the carbs can help you eliminate possible problems.

Keep the rubber side down and ride safe :)

Ok I chaned the pulgs and wires and reset the valve clearance and it runs now and it does ot stall but it is still rough sounding and has th problem i heard descrbe going back to idol quickly. So what will a unsynced bike sound like.

If the carbs are out of synch it may idle Ok but as you give it throttle slowly it will miss and stumble until it gets to about 1/4 throttle. It will also cause it to make knocking sounds at low RPM.

would it also cause the bike to blue smoke when it starts up in the morning. It starts fine but a puff of smoke and then we go.

The puff is pretty normal as the cylinders are horizontal, allowing the oil to drain down on the lowest bore.

Do a synch, get back to us.

If the synch doesn't work I'm thinking you need to recheck the float levels and needle valves.
Take off the aircleaner and look into the intake plenum while it's idling. If you see gas then you definitely need to reinvestigate the float levels.

Can you do any damage riding the bike with the carbs out of sync.
