GL1100 spits and sputters

6889 Views 11 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  DaveO430
Good morning to everyone, hope everyone had a good ride this past weekend. Ok now down to my bike's problem. I have a 1982 Gl1100 with 60,000 miles on it, I have noticed that the bike seems to run great except for my gas milage, but it seems that when I try to give it gas to speed up it spits and sputter like it has a miss in it. The carb's have been rework and they have been sync. I changed the spark plugs. I have put sea foam thru it. Like I said the gas milage is bad but it run fine. What am I missing or what do I need to check.

Thanks everyone and be carefull riding:praying:

Even though you said the carbs have been worked on, this type of problem is usually caused by carb problems. I would also check for vacuum leaks and check the condition of the spark plugs. Was it running ok before it started doing this, or has it been this way since it was last worked on?

So it runs great, but it does not run great?:?

The bike had been sitting up for about 2 years when I got it, it seem to be running fine at normal speed until I gave it gas, i was told by a motorcycle mech.who check the carb. he told me that it may need to be run for a while. I checked for vacuume leaks and I just just changed the plugs out. The bike also seems to be running a little rich

Ok, this is what you said in the first post.

Which is it? Have the carbs been physically taken apart, inspected, cleaned, parts replaced that needed replacing, put back together and tuned...

...or did someone give you some shiddy advice and that is what you're rollin' with?

Yes they have been rebuilt and sync

I would say THAT is not a viable motorcycle mechanic to go back to. :readit:

If it don't run right, the real problem was not fixed.
If he was a real mechanic he would have checked the vac hoses and let you know so they can be replaced.
In my book the vac lines are part of the fuel system.

Do scout for a mechanic worthy of your money.

+1

That "fact" that it spits and sputters when accelerating suggests vacuum leak. Check the intake elbows where they connect to the heads. If the large O-rings there were not replaced, replace them. Cheap, easy fix and the most likely source of vacuum leak "under load."
Don't expect these bikes to accelerate cleanly at all times. As you know at certain speeds a down shift is necessary to accelerate. Before I did the Dodge Neon coil mod mine wouldn't accelerate cleanly from 60 in OD or 5th. Even now with the coil mod it isn't sharp.

When the spitting and sputtering occur does a down shift allow it to accelerate cleanly?

Has anyone checked the plug wires, coils and the ignition wiring? Did anyone remove the cover and check the mechanical advance? Has the vacuum advance been checked?

Do you know what your MPG are?
Gentle please...?!

Tough crowd here...
The poor dude is looking for help & some information to lead him toward a resolution of a percieved problem

My 1980 GL1100 also runs fine -- but not really..
Mine seems to run a little rich and starts a bit hard but once it's warmed up it purrs like a kitten with plenty of power..
BUT - It only deleivers 35 MPG which I think is poor and the exhaust pipe tips are a slight bit dark almost like sooty...

I KNOW a carb rebuild is in my very near future...A good clean out and new orings should help a lot..then set the idle misture properly and finally a carb synch after the bench synch was done while cleaning...I own an Ultrasonic cleaner and a bucket of carb dip so I know what I will be doing soon...

But not everyone has acquired this wisdom to kow what to do next..mcrowdus...your carbs need attention. A good cleaning and rebuild ...the mechanic you are using may be taking some shortcuts that do noet lead to a complete job...but he was right about one thing....the Wing NEEDED to be run more (instead of sitting for 2 years) ...

A complete carb tune up shold help a lot and check the acuum hoses too while you have it all apart... I am not an expert by any means..but that is where I would start...

Possible Accelerator Pump problem?

Was the diaphragm replaced in the accelerator pump? If not, are you sure it's in good shape?

Also (and this is a shot in the dark) but the accelerator pump rod -- visible on the outside of carb #3 -- should have its foot against a tab that moves when you accelerate. It is possible to install the pump with the end of the rod next to -- instead of on top of -- that tab. (Don't ask me how I know.)

I'm no expert, and maybe one will be along to correct me, but it seems to me that this could cause your problem.
I would say by the way it acts it is an ignition problem. A lot of people fight with the carbs to no avail when it's the ignition causing the problem. Replace the spark plug caps and wires and if that doesn't solve the problem replace the coils. You can maybe find good OE coils but for less money you can do either the neon coil or CBR coil mod.
