I am doing a complete overhaul of ths GL1100 1983. Opened the forks and found three springs inside each one. One long spring,a second one about 5 inches long, and athird softer short spring about 2-3 inches in length.Anybody has an explanation? service manual and parts list show only two springs per fork!!!! Thanks.

Should only be 2 springs.
Someone might have added the extra to preload. Get some new Progressives for a better ride.

There is a 3rd spring in the bottom between the piston and the tube. It is called the rebound spring. It is there do dampen the fork when it fully extends.
