new to this, have a question about whats normal engine noise for gl1100 with 52000 miles on it. engine is quiet if i run up on rpm slowly to about 5000, but if i load it sounds like rod knock or piston slap, seems to be from right side. no smoke no leaks runs smooth. could it be detonation or carbon. can you all tell me what you have seen out there. thanks randy

Someone with an 1100 should be along soon to answer your questions but while you wait,

The 1100 (and 1000) have a common "knock" just off idle under load, and when the engine is lugging. Sounds like a pretty bad thing! It is the main drive chain, and can usually be quieted by a good carb sync. The best way to tell if this is your knock is to pull in the cluch when it does it. If it goes away or lessens, you are probably in need of a carb sync!

These engines like RPMs, don't like to lug.

sorry i did not tell you more but this noise is not off of idle , it comes in around 3500 rpm and up only loaded, no noise if i come up slowly. thanks

Mine does the same, from about 3000rpm +. The oil light goes out quickly and never flickers at idle so I believe the oil pressure is good. There is no "gold dust" in the oil and the compression is good and even. I've put 15,000 miles on and it hasn't gotten any worse so I ignore it.

My GL1100 acts the same way, But i've noticed that the noise gets louder when the engine temp get higher. Could a lean condition cause this? :(

I've noticed the same thing with mine. Changing the fuel filter helped a great deal, but did not completely eliminate it. Also adding 1 oz of tc3w (outboard marine 2 stroke oil) per gallon in the gas has cleaned up a number of engine noises.

The 1100's are very sensitive to carb fueling differences. If one is off by just a little, the whole engine sounds like it will grenade.

However most of that happens just off idle, not under load above 3k. A carb synch won't do a thing for 'at speed' running to my knowledge.

What do the plugs look like? All the same?

mine did the same noise your talking about i flushed the engine with seafoam and had the carbs rebuilt and sync'd no more noise runs fine i use the sea foam every service 200 miles or so before its due to clean out all the muck my noise was mainly a clutch noise but some banging from the motor gap the plugs correctly and make sure your not running lean hope it helps

Mine had a knock, but was burning oil faster then gas. I won't go into the cost of my fix.
