Hello folks, I have an '86 Aspencade and was wondering if anyone has ideas on how to get my digital tachometer working. It just displays "0", with the red rectangular light below illuminated continuously.

Any ideas on how to track down the problem?

Thanks!

Just below your ignition key is a pod with seven buttons. Try cycling the third button in the top row a few times and see if the condition clears.

Thanks Glhonda, just tried that and it didn't seem to have any effect, just turned the "0" on and off, with the rectangular red light staying on.

My next option would be to trace the wiring, except I have no idea where the sending unit might be...

OK, I went through and checked and cleaned all the connections as outlined in Glhonda's excellent recommendations & schematic. Everything checked out good. I then took the bike out for a nice long highway ride. Still nothing.

I shut the bike off for about an hour or so, got back on it and voila, the tach started working for the first time!

But then it quit again, gradually, after about five minutes of more riding. Not sure what to do at this point. Since the bike sat for quite awhile before I got it around a month ago, I'm (foolishly?) hoping it'll just pick back up once I ride it some more.

Thanks again for the input, I'll keep posting on it as things develop. I've noticed there's no information on this topic on any of the forums, or the web for that matter, so thanks to Glhonda for illuminating a dark area of GL1200 restoration.

Just an update in case it helps people down the road. It was something faulty in the Speedometer/ gauge cluster itself. Dave0430 hooked me up with a replacement and that solved the problem.

One other thing that might help people in the same situation, the odometers are easy to swap out in case you get a new speedo unit but want to keep the same mileage on the bike, it's just two little screws on the back of the plastic housing, and then two more to detach the odometer mechanism from the small electric motor that turns the odometer dials. Changing the numbers on the odometer itself, as far as I can tell, is virtually impossible without irreversibly damaging the odometer mechanism.

Thanks for the input everyone.

You should send your old panel to someone good with electronics (and with good eyes) not me in either case, and see if it can be fixed. Someone on here would probably be glad to look at it.
