I had the same problem a few years ago on my 85. It turned out to be a fuel related issue with a controller that told the bike how much gas to put into the cylender. I can't remember the name of the part, but I think it was called somethinglike a fuel sensor.I guess what was happening was that the backfiring was from too much gas getting sent in and eventually it flooded the cylenders and the bike stalled.Hope this helps.
