OK, the question is actually about the little "condom" that covers the bulb. The new bulb didn't come with one. Does that mean it's not needed? Anyone replaced the bulb without it?

Just wont have the color of the skin and you'll get a brighter light in the clock.
On the 1500 speedo its recommended to go w/o the skin for more light in the speedo to brighten it up.

It looks like that would be a good candidate for an led.

Anyone tried that?

you can switch the "condom" from one to another but you have to be very careful in removing it from old bulb

Yeah, that's what I ended up doing, however the bulb broke loose from the old housing.

I went ahead and put thedash back together with the old sleeve on the new bulb but I am going to put an LED in the old housing and next time I have the bike torn down that far, try that out.
