My 84 1200 is not hitting nuetral. It just wont go into nuetral everytime is this a clutch problem and how much does a clutch job cost

First, welcome to the forum, Jim.
First, lets forget neutral for a moment. How does the clutch work as far a taking off from a stop is concerned? Also, with the bike in gear, can you sit and idle with the clutch lever pulled in, or does the bike want to creep?

See how much freeplay you have in the clutch lever.
There is a brass "barrel" in the lever to make contact with the push pin for the clutch master. These barrels end up dry, a the pin wears a hole through them. Ten dollar fix.
