GL1200: Difference between Interstate and Aspencade calipers?

3713 Views 9 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  joska
I need to rebuild or replace the front calipers on my 84 Interstate. I've seen some Aspencade calipers on eBay, would these fit my Interstate?

Also, are the brake pads the same for all models?

Pads are the same for both models for all years. 5mm thick rotors for both models up to 1985, 10mm thick rotors 1985-87.

Scroll down to the EBC fitment chart.
Same pads and calipers are also used on all GL1500 years as the GL1200's, and I think all GL1000 and 1100's, only the rotors and caliper mounts changed.
The GL110 was a mixed bag, you almost have to by the same year as the bike. Went from single piston, to dual pistons, and the diameter of the pistons changed almost every year too.

On the '84-'86 GL1200 the pads should all be the same. Typical replacement is the FA69/3 series of pads from EBC.

Someone needs to correct that page. The Interstates had the 5mm solid rotors. The Aspencades had the 10mm vented rotors. Regardless of the year.
Pads will interchange, as well as the calipers, but the mounts will need to be re-used.

I asked a number of years ago for corrections too, but no one listens. They list FA29 pads as fitting the rear of the '82 and '83 GL1100, among other things. Quite a few mistakes in that chart.
This would add to the original question. If the calipers are the same between the Aspencade and Interstate, can you upgrade an Interstate to the 10mm vented rotors?

Yes but you need the Aspencade caliper mounting brackets and offset antidive links.

That chart is the actual EBC chart copied & pasted here, so there might be reluctant to change it in case it really is correct. However, I would say if you PM wingnut with corrections you are sure really are eh.. correct, he will edit the chart.

Thanks, that's exactly what I need to know :)
